Relocation guide for Aberdeen Proving Ground - BRAC
Aberdeen Proving Ground is the Army’s oldest active proving ground. It was established on October 20, 1917. During World War I the Army realised that they needed a placefor testing munitions and equipment that was not located close to a heavily populated area. APG officially opened on December 14, 1917, and the first gun was fired on January 2, 1918 during a heavy snowstorm. The War came to an end on November 11, 1918, just as they got up and running with there testing missions. Today it is called “The Home of Army Ordnance” and is a key element in the nation’s defense. APG is considered to be one of the Army’s finest test, evaluation, research, development, engineering, and training installations in the world.
Aberdeen Proving Ground embodies more than 72,500 acres in Aberdeen, MD which is in the Northern part of Harford County, MD. It’s northernmost point is marked by the confluence of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. On the south it is bordered by the Gunpowder River. The area to the south is known as the Edgewood Area (EA) and the area to the north is called the Aberdeen Area (AA). These two areas are seperated by the Bush River. The city of Aberdeen is positioned on both I-95 and Rt. 40 and located between New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington D.C. Directions

More than 7,500 civilians work at Aberdeen Proving Ground, and more than 5,000 military personnel are assigned there. In addition, there are nearly 3,000 contractors and private business employees working on the proving ground. There are 2,148 military family members living on the post and another 155 off post. The post supports more than 16,000 military retirees and retiree family members. The post is Harford County’s largest employer and one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland.

Once BRAC (Base Closure and Realignment) is complete in 2011, it is estimated that there will be 10,000 personnel transfered to APG and 40,000 jobs created due to this base realignment.
